Day 5. Strathgordon to Hobart

Our day began just like the last ones, raining and misty and cold.

Then as we we left the rain stopped a bit and we set off in a balmy 13C.

Our first stop was 7km in the opposite direction to visit the Pedder dam. Built in the early 70’s it supplies most of Tasmania with Hydro power. It certainly is an impressive structure and I couldn’t resist descending many steps and walking across it.

Can you spot Mark?

It’s rugged country.

In the high tourist season a company runs abseiling off it for intrepid tourists.

I have to admit to a bit of deep breathing by the time I climbed out, wet motorcycle gear is quite heavy.

Then it was retracing our steps from yesterday, it didn’t rain too much and we seemed to cover the distance easily.

By the time we got to the turn-off to Hobart it was fine and warm.

We stopped for a cuppa in Derwent and stripped off quite a few layers, ah so nice.

Then Maps.me guided us through the B roads and suburbs to our hotel in central Hobart.

The road into Hobart passed by lots of farmland and crops of grapes and hops, very pretty and the surrounding countryside is browned off with the summer sun.

We settled into the hotel then set off for an explore, the dock area is similar to the Auckland viaduct with bars and cafes dotted around.

We wandered through an art shop precinct and then went off to explore the Battery Point area with many of the original houses, restored and intact and obviously loved, very cool to see.

Check out what’s written above the door.

Then we went back to the docks where they had set up some stalls and a live band playing, I had oysters au natural, washed down with a fine Smokey Porter from the local craft brewer. Robyn wanted her oysters Asian style cooked only I missed the cooked part when ordering so they came raw, what a women, managed to get 5 down before conceding defeat.

We had heard about food stalls in a nearby park and went off to investigate, such a cool atmosphere, people congregating for dinner and listening to a live band so we ordered our main course and had ice cream for dessert.

All in all a really good day, it’s so nice to be warm.
